Hi, I haven't been keeping up with technology for the past couple months, and I'm not really sure as to what is the difference between a socket 939 cpu and a socket 940 cpu. So I have a couple questions.

1) Which cpu/motherboard (940 or 939) is better, furthermore what makes it better than the other?

2) Is a socket 940 cpu compatible with a sock 939 motherboard?

3) Is a sock 939 cpu compatible with a sock 940 motherboard?

I'd much appreciate any answers from those of you who are technically inclined, thank you.

Socket 939 is replacing the socket 740 amd64's. The 940's are for the amd64 FX series which are bacically the same processers but with 1mb of l2 cache and cost about $300 more.

If you're buying today, I would go with a socket 939 as that will allow for upgrades to faster procs in the future(Unless they change it again). Unless of course you have loads of cash and can afford the amd64 fx proc, which isn't worth the extra money IMO.

EDIT: I meant socket 754 not 740...I'ts hard to keep up. They had slot A, but then they also had socket A, now it's the pin count...sheesh, who can keep it straight?

Thanks for the help guys, If I do go with the 64 bit, I will probably get a 2800 (the cheapest) and upgrade in a couple years, so I guess it would be best for me to stick with socket 939 since I'm poor .

Edit: hmm I think I got confused, I think the 2800 is a 750something socket. wow I'm so lost.
