I see many people talking about computer issues for online games.

The first thing that comes to mind is the inadequacy's of a retail computer to perform in this fashion. Most Gamers build their own computers.

I will make a few points as to what you really need in the computer case to even begin online gaming at it's current level in the last 2 years.

First off I will tell you for free that I am a Quality Control Engineer and have worked in the electronics industry for 20+ years. I have degrees in computer science and also Electrical and mechanical engineering and just about any other deg necessary to be a Quality control engineer. HECK I am even fibre optic certified.

Ok enough about my dumb ass because I learned most about computers in online rolls using them for leisure time blowing off stress in online games. In fact anyone outside of online games doesn't have a clue!! Most engineers included.

Ok Windows XP or pro as it stands now needs a CPU minimum of 800MHz in most cases before the operating system will even install in most cases it will not let you install XP on a lesser CPU, however I have seen a few installs on CPU's with less then 800MHz.

The second and most important thing about windows XP is that it NEEDS minimum 512 MB of hardware installed memory preferably DDR memory at least PC 2700.

Ok now that we have that out of the road I will write a few requirements for a computer that anyone who builds one or wants to purchase one retail would want in the case to online game.

CPU: 1 GHz or better.

RAM: two 512MB sticks of matched memory running in DUAL channel.

Graphics: A plugNplay ATI or GeForce graphics card minimum 128 MB with 8X AGP, and a real good heatsink cooler on it with fan. NOTE* there are no other cards made by any other manufacturer for games that are better then a ATI or Nvidia graphics card so don't bother looking.

MoB: A motherboard that supports the CPU @ 1GHz or better that also supports 8X AGP Buss for the 8X Graphics card and DUAL channel Memory capable. Preferably a 400MHz supporting motherboard or greater depending on the CPU.
The motherboard should be bare bones with no shared memory or graphics buss. You can use the onboard sound with most new motherboards as it is as effective as most third party sound cards unless you go big time on an internal or external sound rack simply use the onboard Dolby Audio.

YOU WILL NEED a power supply that is at least 450 WATTS or if you can get it 500 Watts to power your new Motherboard chipset, graphics card, CPU and memory. This is mostly overlooked by many but 99% or retail computers have a none shielded 300 Watt piece of junk power supply and the second you plug in that new AGP graphics card your computer pukes out!!

That is about all you need in a computer to online game accept if you can get it a Good Cable Connection. Most new motherboards support a built in LAN or network RJ45 port so you do not need to by a PCI LAN card anymore.

Below are my current system specs for my game computer.

AMD 64 FX-51 128-Bit Integrated 6.4GB Memory Controller with 1152kb (1MB) Cache.
Asus VIA K8T800 Deluxe Motherboard.
Two 512MB Sticks of Kingston DDR 4300 Hyper/x RAM in Dual Channel.
2 MAXTOR Diamond Max Plus-9 80 GB 7200 SATA Optical Hard Drives 8MB Cache 150MB/sec.
ASUS GeForce FX5950 Ultra 256MB 950 MHz DDR Clock Engine, 950 MHz Memory Clock DDR.
Hercules XP 7.1 External Dolby/Digital Sound Rack.
Altec Lansing 7.1 Audio speaker system
1 MB Cable/server/routers/1 GHz capable.
Computer is a Liquid Cooled Home built system.

Welcome, and people around here know plenty about computers, i don't think you've been around long enough to know that, just FYI, most of us know the pros and cons of computers, but thanks for letting me read something

I like smartFTP

The only thing I have to say about XP...why after all this time and water under the bridge our good buddy Microsoft should have this thing working smooth...is it so difficult to network and share printers...requesting passwords when none are used etc etc...wont see others on networks...cant get into them...etc...etc....

Just like eveywhere we have all kinds of people from all age groups...from the very old....to the very young.... from computer engineers to sales people, between all of us we could make a company with all the talent but in regards to the old ones...Ill let you figure out who they are.

I think the gig of memory is really important. Since I have been at that level everything just works smoothly. Im over all real happy with my machine.
Its a abit IS7 Motherboard with 2.4 p4 It never crashs, always runs and is reasonably fast enough to run all the current games, including Battlefield 1942 smoothly and run a 1000 picture power point presentation at no interval with out missing a beat, and those are full size photos

What is the cpu speed?

Oh and it might help some people out to know how much you system or a good gaming system would cost.
