I know of some people who were in the exact same situation.
They fought in Castro's army for the revolution, and when he won, he took their home, their livliehood, and tried taking them. They only barely escaped. _________________

| About ten people from Iraq are moving in across the street soon - the just fled as the US nad GB moved into iraq. They walked for three days into northern iraq and then into syria... The father was supposedly one of those "marked-men" who Saddam would kill if he found. |

This is a good example of one fleeing with family for safety. You can also look at the Kurds and that Iran backed force that stayed and opposed Saddam as another example. Saddam would of been hard for a popular opposition to forment and fight against him. To many factual/tribal infighting. Saddam pretty much used that to stay in power. Along with giving all the power and ability to make a living to his own people. I think it becomes hard for people to remove a dictator that has reigned longed and survived the best rebellion that the opposition could put up. That would one reason to explain Castro's longivity.
When Castro goes and I think that will happen within five years. Either due to natural cause of death or somebody expediting his check out itme with say a "Heart Attack" in his sleep. There will probably be a bloody civil war. In fact I don't think he has been in actual power for the past few years. I believe his successor, his son has been running things. Fidel's son will most likely upon Fidel's death terminate his potential rivals to stay in power. It doesn't appear on the surface that there is any group that supports free elections and refrom. That will be in the position to grab hold of power. The Valerie(sp?) Project only appears to be a one shot political group, devoid of any leaders that could lead a rebellion or grab the seat of power. I don't see us recuirting or training any Cubans here to fight the day Fidel kicks the bucket. So I would fear that Cuba is just going to get another dictator. One friend pointed out that whatever person can gain power early on will most likely make a plea for the US to get involved and shield from the other rivals. It will be interesting to see. |
