Howdy.

I just got an internet connection in my dorm
room up at college, 99.95% sure it's a T-1 connection
that the school gets from Alltel...

But the thing is, every minute or so, I get terrible
lag spikes ranging from about 300 ms lasting the
blink of an eye...

To 1000+ ms spikes lasting about 10 seconds, to
times when connection seems to break for a half
second or so.

I can't figure out what the problem is, and the
connection seems to pretty decent on everything
else I run. (ie: Websites, Kazaa, etc...)

If anyone knows what could be wrong, or a place
that might know what is wrong, I'd appreciate any
help.

Thanks!

Pair of Dice Lost.

hey PL, welcome to the ville.

you might want to close down all your other programs that use bandwidth, like instant messager and kazaa before you play, i've found that it helps sometimes. you could also contact the computer people at you school if the problem keeps happening, and ask them what you can do. if they dont really pay attention to you, call back the next day. if you bug them enough, they will probably help you just to get you off their back, haha

let me know if any of those suggestions work, and i hope you stick around and become a part of our community.

What game would this be? There are some tweaks you can do for DoD and stuff. It could also be your computer. Is it a fairly decent comeputer? Also, it could be server-side..

Like they said before, close anything like Kazaa and IMs first to see if it helps.

http://www.dslreports.com/stest

that'll tell you the speed of your connection.

plus if its your whole school you might consider how many people are on it at particular times

First and foremost run a tracert to the server and see if you are having any bad hops. You can have the greatest connection in the world, but if there is a bad router between you and the server, you are going to have huge lag.

Me and my friend figured it out. Basically, if
we set out 'rate' from 7500, or 10,000, or whatever
it is set at, to about 2000-3000 (not any higher),
our ping range seems to never lag spike above
150 because of the extremely high usage.

So if anyone else has this problem, wherein
you're pinging at 50 ms for about a minute, then
lag spike up to about 1000, just lower your rate.

thats true. you need to change those based on the connection you have.
for 56K modems you set those low and if you have broadband you can set those up.

It also depends on how the servers are set up. Some of them may be set up with a lower allowable setting. If you set it too high then you will get tons of choke.

I didn't think you could go past 10,000?

You may be able to type 'rate 99999999', but only 10,000 is allowed.
