Thats the sound my comp keeps making, you know when you load up a bunch of programs at once, and the light comes on and you hear it thinking? Well my comp has been making thinking sounds when im not doing anything, the lights not on or anything, but it sounds like its trying to open like 50 programs. Any ideas?

Like I told Speaker For the Dead,

SHAFT gave me this link to go to. It's a step by step on things you can do to speed up your system. It basically just helps you get rid of all the crap running in the background and stuff.

it's not that going to the performance page doesn't work, it's when you click on the "Let's do this thang" link that doesn't work

Ok, I figured it out, it's simply a broken link on the page. Click here to go to the introduction. I checked the link to page 3, and it did the same thing, so for every page, make sure it looks like this http://www.readyroom.org/archive/perfgde_2.html and just change perfgde_2.html to whatever numbered page you're going to.

Actually shockwave, i dunno if anyone posted about this, i was gonna right after i found out but i forgot, after you install STEAM, I HIGHLY SUGGEST YOU DEFRAG!!!!! Steam puts crap all over the place. And yes i defragged after d/l steam, and the really weird thing is, my HD dropped a gig lol. After defrag it like minused a gig off what i had, odd.

Cut---Idea from Valve !

If Steam is improperly shut down three times in a row, on the next launch it will check all of the cache files for integrity. This will indeed mean reading just about every byte of the file. Unfortunately, on older systems this can take a while.

If you kill Steam in the middle of this process, it will just do it again the next launch.

I'm not sure why some of you, even after letting the process complete, have it happen again a few days later. You might try shutting Steam yourself before restarting/shutting down your computer. If that doesn't help, let me know.

Feel free to PM or email me (taylors at valvesoftware dot com) with more information if that's not working for you.

We're working on displaying a message to the user when this is going on so it's not mysterious. Meantime, sorry and thanks for your patience.
