I really dont think its steam causing your lag, steam doesn't control your internet connection.(Unless, you were getting a update, then you might lag). I was playing last night and my pings were pretty darn good. Like everybody is saying, steam is here to stay, and won will be shut down soon.
You should really start yelling at your ISP if your connection is that bad.
Try again, you probably just had a bad night.
Coming from a server op, one thing I did notice, is Steam took one heck of a CPU load off of the servers. |

Steam can cause lag on a lot of computers not because it ties up the connection, but because of the amount of CPU it takes to run it. The latency is probably what people are referring to. Everyone is running a big program in the background now when they play, and if you lack resources it can cause a lot of lag. On my computer, it has actually reduced lag in games, which is probably because I have plenty of resources to use.

I stand corrected. Steam is really starting to P*SS me off.. All this hard drive thrashing is bringing my cpu down to a CRAWLLLLLLL.......
And this recent Steam update? What a Joke. They wont even reply on there own forums and post a fix.. |

I'm finding the same snail pace even if I close everything else running 
900Mhz 384 ram
