You would be surprised how much you would be interested in these kinds of things when you surf.

It has to be a dolphin because Snopes says so.

You can't question that sort of authority!

When you see a shark, take your legs out of the water and catch a wave in. Oh, and don't go swimming with seals, you look like a huge, slow seal.

Look at the pic yourself, why would the fin be pointed and the dolphins fin round? I doubt the water refraction would do that.

Actually, yes, the water refraction would do that. The "bend" of light passing though the rounded surface of the wave would cause the object viewed to appear substantially different than reality. If the tip of the dorsal fin is near the surface and the body of the animal deeper in the water the refraction, due to the curved face of the wave, would be different for the different depths of the object.

Humans swimming sound like a dying fish and sharks swim really fast If they really wanted to prey on people it would be like an all you can eat buffet

I know, I was saying that I doubt it would make the fin look pointed if it really was round.

Photography tip - This picture was likely taken with a very long (higher power/telephoto) lens. Probably from a tripod on the beach. The result is that the dolphin looks a bit larger than it really is relative to the man in the fore. (It is a perspective thing - just the opposite of a "fish-eye" lens - which makes close objects look very big compared to distant objects)

I did some quick calculations from the scale of the man in the picture and the dolpin. This dolphin would be somewhere around 10-13 ft long. Indeed a large dolphin, but not outside of the range of bottlenose dolphins.
{see: Bottlenose Dolphin - click on the link}

BOTTLENOSE DOLPHIN

Compare the picture of the dolphin fin to the shark fin:

BOTTLENOSE DOLPHIN FIN

GREAT WHITE FIN

In this particular case it is hard to question what Snopes has said since they point you to the original photographer. It is easy enough to verify with the photographer that the second picture is indeed of the same animal.

hate to break it to ya guys, but it's definitely a dolphin. i've been around the gulf coast and gulf of mexico alot in my life and i've seen many sharks and many dolphins. i can't count how many times i've seen dolphins "body surfing" in the waves. they're very playful creatures. sharks on the other hand, don't tend to engage in that kind of activity. everytime i have seen a shark it has been in one of three different ways.
1) chasing the fish we catch up to the surface when we deep sea fish.
2) generally sulking around the gulf bottom around the 2nd sandbar
3) on my fishing hook

kason, i still hate your posts and i don't find it necessary that you spam every thread with incoherent babble and smileys. please stop using the internet. kthx.

I don't see how this post is considered spam, kamikaze. Sure it's hard to read, but he's posting his thoughts of how much bigger a fully sized shark is. It was on topic. Maybe you should keep your opinions to yourself if they aren't nice.

I don't mean to start a fight, I'm just giving advice. Take it or leave it....

::sigh:: stevo, what relevance did his post have other than to draw attention to himself? if you haven't noticed, i don't post on many threads, and when i do, it's usually something significant. it just seems that on every thread i DO post on, kason has already polluted it by either going off topic (ie: woodworking thread) or doing things to draw attention to himself (see this thread). my whole problem with him is it seems that he posts EVERYTHING he thinks and i'm tired of wading through his thoughts to get to the meat'n'potatoes of a thread. there are some others on here that do the same, but kason is a perfect example.

oh, and stevo, you're fighting a losing battle here. i also think you're stupid and theville thong doesn't look good on you.
#Beer here's to keeping my "mean" opinions to myself.
