I wish they had kept what they learned from 98 and put it in ME. If you sneeze, it crashes sometimes. Oh, in case you didn't know, Win95 has officially been discontinued from Microsoft's support network. *sighs with relief*

(short story about 95 from my job as a Computer/Network Help Desk Consultant)

I had a guy bring his not just old, but smelly (think Bowling alley circa 1985) and very dirty PC in for us to work on. He had a 40GB hard drive in 17 partitions, just so he could use all the space (Win95 has issues with large disk partitions for all of you out there who don't find this amusing).... I just about died laughing once he left. He had his monitor set to 600x480, because he thought it was showing him more of his screen.(like widescreen vs pan and scan for movies) His comp. stunk up the entire office. He is not allowed to bring it in ever again.

WinXP is the merging of the NT and Win9x GUI. It's "user friendly" like the 98/ME line, and has NT/2000's stability and security(and task manager). I like to refer to the standard XP GUI look as "My first OS" or WinFP (for "Fisher Price"). I enjoy feeling 5 when operating a computer, don't you?

Well all I can say is that if you have something slightly wrong with your computer running under Win98/SE it is going to crash on you. I used to always pray to the OS gods to not freeze up on me. Then I got XP (For the main purpose to improve my gaming experience) whats ironic is that XP ,I think, sucks for gaming. So I find myself praying to the OS gods once again just so I can get a decent game of TFC.

Snipe have you tried the Detonator 3 drivers from nVidia's web site? I have the TNT 2 card and use the Det 3 drivers for the Riva.

I had the EXACT same problem with win2k. You'll be playing just fine, then it freezes and repeats one sound over and over and you have to power down. The way I fixed it is exactly what cstone said, update every driver you can. Specifically what seemed to do it for me was the motherboard drivers. Also, I disabled APCI, which seemed to help some too. And of course, run the Windows updates to search for patches and what not. If you have updated all your drivers and you arent having problems in any other application then reinstall HL. Good luck!

Well, everybody, Thank you all so much for the help, and I believe I am going go back to good ol' 98 SE, I mean, it was crashing rather often over winter break, but I think that had more to do with my ISP than my comp...

I found out last night that my 100 dollar soundcard isn't working correctly. I mean, what good is a dolby 5.1 sound card with EAX, if you can't use dolby 5.1 or EAX?

Ah well, A clean install of 98, and a fun day of installin shit should be fun. Luckily, last time I installed 98, I reformatted, so I have a nice 30 gig partition of all my documents (mp3s, papers, photoshop stuff, etc...) So I will only be ditchin the software that I have, and most of the stuff I have installed, I have installation programs for, so I think all will go off without much of a hitch.

Once again, Thanks a lot for all of your help, I knew that I could count on the Ville when I needed Help...

lmao Snaggletooth!!

I've never even used WinXP but the interface does look like a child's toy.

I'm stickin' with Win2k... for a loooong time. MS really screwed up with this OS - We have no reason to upgrade!! lol.

WIndows 98 SE is way more unstable then NT 2000 and XP, The NTFS file system is made to deal with a more stressful computing environment, which means less crashes. If anyone has trouble with NT 2000 or XP its because of a compatibility issue, whether its video drivers, motherboard, processor speed or overclocking Etc. and to agree with an earlier post 98 upgraded to ME and XP is windows 2000 for dummies because the functionality is the same it just does most of the configuring itself. I use XP myself and the only problem ive had with crashes stem from yahoo messenger, but thats because yahoo is buggy and unstable anyways. also crashes with XP dont shut down the system, just the program that caused the problems.

snaggletooth I cant agree with you more I used to install networks in grain elevators so I know the feeling of working on horrible machines. Also with the 17 partitions thats the funniest thing ive heard, I know that 95-98 and I believe ME only officially support partions up to 4 gig, you can go higher but the os becomes unstable. (nice work bill gates) another plus with NTFS is it supports drives with an unlimited partition size, therefore making it more stable, FYI the best computer I ever worked on at one of these places had a rats nest in it. Good times let me tell ya. Ok im done with my pro XP rant.
