The NEC drives work great. I have the ND-3500 model, and I've have no problems burning anything, including movie backups on DVD-Rs or RWs. Haven't tried +Rs or the dual layer discs yet.

Right now, the Centrinos are the way to go for decent performance with low power consumption. I have a Dell Inspiron 8600 and get good battery life and has good enough hardware to be reasonably fast.
