ok well since i downgraded to my old comp i havent been able to get steam to work. i reinstalled it, have directx 9.0 (or better) and now i bought dod:s just to see if i could get that to work....and no go. i know my account works cause i was playing on a friends comp earlier today..................i tried to start up hl2 and css different ways and both do the same thing. when i try to play it says launching (whatever program) and then the little box disappears and nothing happens....i searched the help forums of steam but couldnt find anything.

any help would be appreciated

I think you may be able to open it in a window then make it full size.
One of my co-workers had a problem like that.

Have you tried deleting your clientregistry.blob file.? Another thing is log all the way off and back on again sometimes a update is stuck. Another thing look at your games list and make sure none of them are paused on the update. It should say right next to the mod wether it's paused or not. If that don't do it you might need a registry cleaner to clean out your registry and then a fresh install. Make sure you delete STEAM before you run it. It fixed mine and alot of other issue's I was having.

On a normal start up my load on my computer was 7-25% all the time with nothing running. I used a registry cleaner and it dropped me back to 0-2%

PS I will post the cleaner I use it's awesome. It does cost I think 20.00, but well worth the money. I have systemmechanic5 Pro and it didn't even clean my system as well as this did. Well as you can tell I had to run this one to fix everything that systemmechanic didn't....lol
