I find that the biggst mistake and easiest to fix is to make sure both computers are in the same workgroup.

I have also found that with all the new firewall protection via Windows, McAfee, or Norton will lock out machines on the network. Disable all the protection while you test connectivity just so it doesn't prohibit you in any way.

if you install the network on your xp machine you should have the option to make a floppy for the other machine running 2000. install that on the 2000 and it should work.

might be that the machine does not show up under your network places. if it doesn't try adding it by using the search function in your start menu. also it could be that it uses the map "shared documents" as the networkmap.

But you see going from xp to 2000 is going backwards (in terms of versions), could be problematic unless the xp disk takes that into account, whereas doing it the other way might work better

This is a totally untested theory based on very little by the way.

doesn't matter, you need to install the xp network version on the 2000 machine.

there used to be a ME and win98 in my network that way.

ps. did you try shutting down the xp firewall?

2000 doesn't hate XP, it's the user that sucks.

sorry, but with replies like that, what do you expect?
